Areas of Expertise

AndoverEcon offers broad expertise in the areas of health care economics, outcomes measurement, and program evaluation.  Our experience is strong in developing and applying economic models of behavior, competition, and regulation in the health care industry. We bring particular expertise in provider payment methods, Medicaid rate setting, hospital costs, workers' compensation medical care, the economics of managed care, and cost-effectiveness analysis.  Our company president, Thomas Grannemann, Ph.D., brings many years of experience in these areas.

Economics of the Heathcare Industry

Dr. Grannemann has broad experience in studies of the healthcare industry. Here are some examples. He directed studies for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on the health care and health insurance industries. He directed a study for the American Hospital Association on hospital costs. He directed work on the home health and long-term care care services for the U.S. Health Care Financing Administration. He conducted research for major insurers on HMO contracts for worker's compensation. For the past five years he has worked with the New Hampshire Medicaid program to provide research and analysis in support of rate setting, finacial management, and new program development initiatives.

We apply our healthcare industry expertise in analysis of healthcare investment opportunities, in assessing strategic opportunities for healthcare organizations, and in research to understand the implications of healthcare financing policies.

Workers' Compensation and Disability

Dr. Grannemann has directed research on a wide variety of workers' compensation medical care and disability issues.  He developed methods for a comparative analysis of state workers' compensation fee schedules, and compared costs and outcomes in five states with data from multiple insurers.  He prepared an economic assessment of alternative contracting strategies for workers' compensation medical care.  To all these areas, Dr. Grannemann brings high-level skills in economic modeling and econometric analysis.  With personal consulting, project-specific research teams, and collaborative efforts with other organization, we:
  • help state agencies develop cost-effective programs and monitor outcomes

  • help insurers assess new opportunities for care management and cost control.

  • help assess innovations in care management and disability management programs and their value to employers and insurers.

Managed Care

AndoverEcon can help managed care organizations and vendors develop and assess new managed care products and then turn good outcomes to competitive advantage with:

  • Evaluations that prove the value of programs to policy makers, senior managers, and customers

  • Focused economic/outcome studies that show how to make programs more cost-effective

  • Economic models to prospectively assess new markets and program innovations

Public Programs

AndoverEcon offers teams with years of experience evaluating federal and state health care financing and delivery programs.  We have experience with Medicare, Medicaid, and workers' compensation.  (see separate link to Medicaid consulting services). Our staff and consultants have addressed program and policy issues in a wide range of areas, including provider payment, long-term care, hospital costs, physician productivity, AIDS, disability, and chronic care.  We bring the ability to:

  • Assess the need for new programs to promote improved care management or to address needs of special populations

  • Measure the costs and outcomes of new programs and demonstration projects

  • Evaluate program performance against stated objectives or benchmarks

  • Provide detailed measures of program performance based on analysis of large medical claims data bases

  • Evaluate provider payment policies and develop payment methods to address specified needs
